Do I Need an English Degree to Write?

This is a question that floats around a lot for writers ~ Do I need a degree to write?

You’re either shaking your head or nodding right now.ย  Here are my thoughts as a college student:

Iย am working towards a degree right now, because I want more opportunities in life.

  • It’s not because I think I cannot make money writing.ย  I already do.
  • It’s not because I think Iย needย a degree to be a writer.ย  I already write.

The reason is a lot more practical and simple.

It’s because 1. I love to learn and 2. I like having open options in life.ย  A college degree gives me more options than just having a high school diploma.ย  Yep, it’s that simple!

Spoiler Alert:ย  I’ve learned more practical advice from how-to books than I have in my college classes.ย  Eck.ย  It’s icky to admit thatย ๐Ÿ˜ญ

But what Iย amย learning in college is how to query, workshop, show up every day, revise, edit, study literature, appreciate the humanities, offer useful critiques, think critically, and the list goes on and on.

Here’s a photo of some of the most helpful books I’ve found about writing.

Not pictured isย On Writingย by Stephen King,ย How I Write…ย by Janet Evanovich, and many other how-to’s from the Kindle Unlimited selection.

So there you have it.ย  The option to pursue a higher degree is up to you, and your personal reasons for doing so.

Take care,

Yari Garcia

  1. I have a writing degree, both a BA and an MFA – no, the degree is not essential to write. I wanted the degree because I thought I wanted to teach creative writing. I still do. But having that degree isn’t a thing one needs to consider themselves a writer.

I agree – I learned more from the workshop portion of the MFA and from reading every how-to guide on writing I could get my hands on!

  2. I have a degree that really helped me write… a degree in religious studies! By learning about global religions, cult mentalities, and different perspectives I learned the essentials to world building. In my opinion, it enriched my stories a ton. Definitely a higher degree isn’t prerequisite to writing, but it definitely helps
