I’ve kept a dream journal for some time now, and it’s always so interesting to go back and read some of the dreams. They can be crazy and wacky, but they can give you insight on your inner life, and inspire stories and poetry too.
Here are 3 tips to keep a dream journal:
1. Jot down the dream right when you wake up
You will think “I’ll remember later,” but unless the dream really stood out, chances are, you’ll forget. I’ve done that more times than I’d like to admit!
Quickly jot down key parts of the dream, let it be messy.
Jot down whatever you remember. Sometimes key parts will trigger more memories of the dream. You may end up with chicken-scratch key words, then a more fleshed out version of your dream below that.
2. Make it into a habit
Habits are hard to break, so if you add dream journaling to your morning, it will become a habit. It’s also an enjoyable process, because dreams can be so enigmatic.
Keep your notebook and pen wherever you spend your mornings.
Have your notebook ready to go in the morning, so that dream journaling becomes an easy part of your mornings.
3. Use your phone for midnight dreams
Sometimes dreams can wake you in the middle of the night. You don’t want to disturb your spouse by turning on the lights, but what you can do is jot down the dream quickly in your phone.
Use any note app to write down key parts of the dream.
Key words are whatever stands out in the dream: places, people, things, themes, feelings, etc. Add them quickly in your phone so that you can journal out the dream in the morning.
